Firefighters in one Wake County town roll up their sleeves to help build new homes.

Ten Cary firefighters are putting hammer to nails for Wake County's Habitat for Humanity as they help build new affordable housing.

Wickham Drive in Cary is abuzz with activity. It's home to Wake County's newest Habitat for Humanity village.

"We wanted to do something in our community, the community which we live and work," Cary Firefighter Allan Smith said. "We felt nothing better than to participate with the Habitat for Humanity."

The firemen are part of the Cary Professional Firefighters Association. Their task is to build seven new homes on a block, a task which really isn't a stretch for most on the site.

"A lot of firefighters off duty do construction," Smith said. "They do roofing or landscaping and in this case would come in very handy for a situation such as this."

"We're very pleased to have them," Construction Supervisor Norma Smith said. "This is the first time they've been on the site."

Smith said the firefighters are a God send, especially when it comes to working in high places.

"They're excellent," Smith said. "They're up on the roofs. We're fixing to do shingles so that's an awesome job."

Employees from GlaxoSmithKline and former IBM workers also lent a hand. For the firefighters, the knowledge gained from building these new homes may be put to use in the future.

The Cary project is one of several for the Wake County Habitat for Humanity. In the coming months new habitat homes are scheduled to be built in Fuquay-Varina and in Raleigh along Lake Wheeler Road as well as Waters Drive.
